ESHIEM - Energetic Solar Heavy Ion Environment Models

 

A consortium led by Kallisto Consultancy (UK) is developing new solar heavy ion and associated shielding models which may be used by spacecraft engineers to predict the radiation threat to future spacecraft mission. The activity began 2nd October 2012 and will run for 2 years. The objective is to provide a statistical model ideally covering all naturally occurring particle species and geomagnetic transport capabilities for spacecraft in a variety of Earth orbits and to update the existing Solar Energetic Particle Environment Modelling (SEPEM) System with these new models and produce an improved user interface. The user requirements are presently being finalised. The existing SEPEM system developed by a consortium led by BIRA (Belgium) can be found here.

IPRAM - Interplanetary and Planetary RAdiation Model (for human spaceflight)

 

A consortium led by DH Consultancy (Belgium) is performing a detailed review of the available models and data necessary to predict the space radiation environment relevant to human spaceflight beyond Earth orbit. The activity began on 5th July 2012 and will run for 1 year. The objective is to define the system needed to provide risk analysis for a range of human spaceflight mission scenarios and to produce a baseline environment specification for humans and components. The system requirements for the assessment and protection measures for future human interplanetary and planetary missions have been established and a review of the state of the art of models and tools is nearing completion.
