Earth Science and Solar System Exploration Division
The Planetary Missions and Materials Branch provides two services:
- The Planetary Missions (exploration) staff develops and supports plans for human and robotic exploration of the Moon and Mars.
- The Planetary Materials (curatorial) staff collects, documents, and distributes extraterrestrial materials for scientific research and provides physical protection, environmental preservation, accountability and records management for sample collections. These sample collections include lunar rocks and regolith returned by the Apollo missions, meteorites recovered by the U.S. Antarctic Search for Meteorites, dust particles collected from the stratosphere, and space-exposed surfaces retrieved from satellites or spacecraft.
