Sunstorm is a ‘2-unit’ (2U) CubeSat, hosting an innovative solar X-ray spectrometer called the X-ray Flux Monitor for CubeSats (XFM-CS). The instrument was developed for ESA by a Finnish consortium led by the company Isaware under the General Support Technology Programme (GSTP).

XFM is an initiative of ESA’s Space Environment and Effects section and the XFM-CS unit is an In-Orbit Demonstration of a novel detection method using silicon drift diodes. Further XFM units are planned to fly on ESA’s future Space Weather mission and NOAA’s Space Weather Follow-On (SWFO) mission.
